Friday night sees Chirk play their first competitive game of the 2023/24 season when we entertain Denbigh Town to Holyhead Road with a 18.45 kick off. This is our second season in The Nathaniel MG Cup, a competition we were knocked out of last season by eventual winners Bala Town.
Our last competitive game against Denbigh was in 2008 when Chirk were defeated 4-1 at Central Park in the 2nd round of The Welsh Cup.
Denbigh come to Chirk as Champions of Ardal North West and also Ardal North Cup Winners. They were denied a historic treble when they lost in the final of The Welsh Trophy. However it was a great season and they are to be congratulated on their success.
Denbigh have recruited well in the summer for the challenge ahead in Cymru North. A player we know from his time at Cefn Druids & Cefn Albion is Ryan Kershaw who made the switch to Central Park a few weeks back. Another player who we’ve come across before is former Llay Welfare striker Matty Worral who is in his second season at Denbigh.
It will be the first competetive game for our new management team of Gary Jones, Jack Ellis & Kieran Lee-Birch. Following the departure of Andy Pryde & James Williams, we had no hesitation in appointing from within and are pleased with the business the team have done in the summer. The squad has been freshened up with the introduction of several new young players. Goalkeeper Oli Farebrother joins us from Penrhyncoch, both Josh Evans & Dan Burnett join after being released by TNS, Spencer Parrish returns to the club after 2 seasons at Guilsfield, striker Iwan Hardy comes in from the now defunct Cefn Druids and Regan Jones joins from Rhostyllen.
Caleb Davies, Mark Richards & Lewis Clamp have gone to Rhostyllen, with onloan TNS striker Rhys Edwards making the switch to fellow Cymru North side Holywell Town.
So many changes at the club but lets hope the new faces and the experience of our first season in Cymru North helps us off to a flying start.
