WBS League Cup - Rnd 1
HOLYWELL TOWN 1 CHIRK AAA 1 (Chirk win 3-4 on penalties)
Chirk went through to the next round of the inaugural Welsh Blood Service Cymru North League Cup in a dramatic penalty shoot out at Halkyn Road, Holywell.
Chirk started the game well and the opening exchanges were on level terms.
It was The Colliers who looked the more likely to score as the half went on with Lewis Clamp, Jack Orbell and Ed Baker all going close with Holywell keeper Keighan Jones on good form with some excellent saves.
Chirk keeper Joshua Jones was also on top form keeping out efforts from Damien Ketley and Tom Bibby.
Level at the break with Chirk unlucky not to be ahead.
The second period again started even but on 56 minutes the home side went ahead with Captain Dan Andrews finishing off a decent move down the left flank.
Holywell piled on the pressure to get their second goal with Andrews twice going close and Dave Hayes being denied by Jones.
Chirk made a few changes with Steff Rogers and Rhys Edwards coming on in the 62nd minute.
Both subs had a hand in the equaliser on 73 minutes with Rogers feeding the impressive Dale Davies who in turn crossed for Jack Orbell to flick on for Edwards to get clear of his marker to get a deserved equaliser.
Both teams had chances in the closing stages but the game finished level and went to straight penalties.
Holywells first penalty was finely saved by Jones and with Chirk scoring their first 4 penalties through Louie Middlehurst , Dale Davies, Jack Orbell and Rhys Edwards, it was left to Jones to get a touch on Holywells fifth and push it over the bar to send Chirk through.
A great win but probably more important a great team performance which again highlights the fact that Chirk can indeed comfortably compete at this level and hopefully have a good season in Tier 2.
Next Saturday we are again on our travels with an away day at League leaders and title favourites Colwyn Bay.
Sandwiched in between is an away game at Mold Alex on Tuesday evening with a 6.45pm kick off.
